Goa Khabar : St. Andre Constituency MLA Viresh Borkar yesterday brought to light the challenges faced by farmers cultivating the renowned “Mardolchyo Jaayo,” the pride of Mardol, during the Zero Hour at the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Addressing the House, Borkar emphasized that nearly 60 farmers in Mardol depend on jasmine flower cultivation for their livelihoods. However, he pointed out a significant gal in the system: floriculture continues to remain outside the ambit of the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act. As a result, these cultivators lack legal protection and secure rights over the land and crops they nurture.
“I urge the government to review the Act and include floriculture, thereby giving these dedicated cultivators the recognition and security they deserve,” Borkar stated. He also called upon the Hon’ble Minister to immediately address this issue and assure the Assembly that the rights of the jasmine farmers will be safeguarded.
In a symbolic gesture underscoring his plea, Borkar handed over a bunch of Mardolchyo Jaayo (jasmine flowers) to the Assembly, seeking justice for the hardworking farmers of Mardol.
The intervention by MLA Borkar highlights the urgent need for policy reforms to recognize and protect Goa’s traditional floriculturists, ensuring sustainability and security for those who keep local heritage and economy alive.
