Goa Khabar : Members present for Legislators Day observed a minute of silence to pay respects to the victims of the Birch Night Club Fire incident, following a request by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao.
Goa Legislative Assembly speaker Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar, Legislative Forum Secretary Mohan Amshekar, Vice President Victor Gonsalves, guest speaker Padmshri Dr. J M Vyas–Vice Chancellor of National Forensic Science University-Gujarat and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Alemao said “Can I avoid a reference to the infamous Birch episode at Baga wherein 25 men and women were burnt alive? Should we dispense this as an accident? Or is this a total collapse of law and order, sinking governance and rising corruption?”

“No Minister wants to own the responsibility and resign over Birch tragedy. No MLA of the BJP wants a debate on this. These are really sad and disturbing trends in today’s MLAs,” Alemao pointed out.
He said that the BJP Government is reluctant to discuss Birch tragedy in the assembly session. “Instead, the government wants to cover up with a discussion to celebrate the 150th year of a national song–Vande Mataram, which is already discussed in parliament,” he said.
Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao raised issues of Mhadei, menace of Casinos in Mandovi river, growing threats to the freedom of choice & expression, and conversion of lands in the state.
“These are people’s demands and expectations from the government, from the administration, from the legislators and from the political parties. They want development of Goa without destruction of Goa’s forests and environment,” he said.
