AIFF Super Cup 2025 : The reigning AIFF Super Cup champions are set for a semifinal showdown against Mumbai FC

Goa Khabar : The defending Super Cup champions are back under the Fatorda lights for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament, as FC Goa gear up to face arch-rivals Mumbai City FC in the semi-finals of the AIFF Super Cup 2025 on Thursday, December 4, at 8:00 PM IST.

For FC Goa, this knockout clash arrives at the end of a uniquely demanding and competitive stretch, one that may well give them an edge heading into the high-pressure contest. While Indian football has been experiencing a prolonged pause in domestic action, the Gaurs have played more competitive minutes than any ISL team over the last three months: an AFC Champions League Two qualifier against Al Seeb (Oman), three Super Cup group-stage games, and five AFC Champions League Two fixtures against elite opposition from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Tajikistan. Having completed all their away trips in Asia, the champions now return home, battle-hardened and sharper than most.

Speaking on whether he would prefer FC Goa’s rhythm or Mumbai’s extended rest heading into such a crucial game, Head Coach Manolo Marquez explained:

“I would prefer to be in FC Goa’s position with more training and more games, although I don’t know,  maybe Mumbai must’ve played a couple of friendlies too. Always, to play in a competition like the AFC Champions League Two against very good teams should be better. Again, it’s one game, knockout, 90 or 120 minutes, and anything can happen.”

Mumbai City FC, meanwhile, enter this semi-final having not played a competitive match for nearly a month. Though they remain one of the ISL’s most consistent teams in recent years, Marquez was quick to underline their strength, describing them as “a quality team, with four quality foreigners, an experienced coach, and many Indian national team players.” The Islanders will now need to quickly find competitive rhythm as they step into a high-intensity knockout tie against a Goa side fully accustomed to the pace and pressure of elite fixtures over the past few weeks.

The Gaurs finished their Super Cup group-stage campaign strongly despite a narrow defeat to NorthEast United in their final fixture, a match that featured a half-rotated squad. With the semi-finals here, the Super Cup champions are expected to restore a more settled starting XI and return to full strength as they push for a place in the final.

Young defender Ronney Wilson, who has quickly made his mark by featuring in both AFC Champions League and Super Cup fixtures since joining the club, spoke about the team’s morale and growth:

“Playing for FC Goa in the Champions League has helped not just me but all the other players. It’s helped us improve a lot, and if we get to play these kinds of matches it will help us grow to great levels. The feeling within the team and the dressing room is really good now, and our bond is strong thanks to all these games we’ve had to play. We are looking forward to the next challenges coming our way.”

Their meeting with Mumbai City FC also carries added narrative weight. The last competitive clash between the two sides came in February 2025, where FC Goa delivered one of their standout performances of the season, a commanding 1–3 win away in Mumbai. A brace from former Islanders’ favourite Iker Guarrotxena and a composed strike from Borja Herrera powered the Gaurs past their rivals in a display that dismantled Mumbai’s structure and silenced the home support. Ten months on, Goa will surely look to draw inspiration from that memorable night as they prepare for another high-stakes showdown.
