Goa Khabar: Goa’s vibrant culinary heritage takes centre-stage at the ongoing 9th edition Serendipity Art Festival (SAF), with Edible Issues, a food systems collective fostering thought and conversation on the Indian food system, co-founded by Anusha Murthy and Elizabeth Yorke.

Amongst a range of issues related to food and ecosystems to be featured in SAF 2024’s culinary segment, gobi manchurian and its recent official banishment by a Goan municipality is one of the topics of discussion.

The wide range of sessions, which include a lineup of 27 workshops, five exhibitions, two performances and four walks curated by Edible Issues, emphasise the profound intersections between food, environment and society. Speaking on the aspect of preservation of Goa’s food heritage, Elizabeth Yorke said: “The challenge lies in balancing the preservation of Goan culinary heritage with the necessity for sustainable food practices, especially for communities reliant on the fishing industry”.

Highlighting the urgency of sustainable practices related to the state’s fishing sector, Yorke further said: “Goa, being a tourist-driven destination, faces a challenge in balancing food consumption with sustainability. The growing trend of viewing food purely as something to consume, whether fish or other commodities, raises important questions about responsible practices for preserving local resources.”

The curation also incorporates topics such as preserving culinary traditions without overconsumption, understanding the environmental impacts of food choices, and fostering deeper connections with local food systems, said Murthy.

The ongoing Serendipity Arts Festival is free and open to the public from 15-22 December, 2024. To register, visit https://www.serendipityartsfestival.com/register
