Goa Khabar : Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Thursday said that despite repeated assurances by the Government that Goa would achieve 24×7 piped drinking water, Government has failed to supply it.

He was speaking during zero hour mention in the assembly session. “There is huge shortage of water supply in the state. Government boasted over ‘Har Ghar Jal’, but the situation today is different. Water is constitutional right. Everyone should get it,” Alemao said.

“Goa’s daily demand for treated water is estimated at around 645 MLD, but actual production and supply fall short by over 80–85 MLD. This deficit forces many households to survive on intermittent supply, relying on tankers to fill the gaps,” he said.

He said that multiple supply disruptions are linked to ageing infrastructure and pipeline failures.

“Pipeline bursts at Opa and Anjuna caused widespread outages as recently as June 2025, and required emergency repairs with restored supply only after delays. In addition, older pipeline networks have to be shut down regularly for repairs, compounding supply unpredictability. The lack of a real-time maintenance and monitoring system exacerbates outages,” he said.

“In areas such as Mormugao taluka residents are forced to depend heavily on expensive private water tankers due to erratic piped supply. Government‐run tanker services are insufficient (8–10 trips per day), and private tanker prices rise sharply during supply crunches,” he pointed out.

“The Town and Country Planning Department continues to clear high-density housing and tourism projects without concurrent assessments of water availability or infrastructure load, worsening shortages in areas like Panaji, Mormugao and Siolim. Government should conduct carrying capacity of the state,” he said.
