State Information commissioner recommends dedicated RTI cell for each department

Goa Khabar:Goa State Information Commissioner(SIC) Pratima Vernekar has recommended creation of separate RTI cell, fully and independently dedicated to RTI matters in each department (public authority) in the state. With the number of queries filed by information seekers increasing in leaps and bounds, creation of such a separate cell will help provide information efficiently and promptly she opined. “If the RTI act is to turn into a tool for democracy in true sense of the word than the information seeker, Public Information Authority(PIO) and First Appellate Authority(FAA) should act in co-ordination and in proper perspective,” she asserted.

SIC Vernekar was speaking at the World RTI Day / International Right to Know Day  program organized by Yuva  Goa in association with Goa RTI Forum and Tito’s Foundation in the capital yesterday.

The program which also comprised of a seminar titled ‘RTI – Tool of Democracy’ saw enthusiastic participation from general public interested in using the Right to Information Act. Renowned RTI activists Ketan Goverkar,  Kashinath Shetye, Secretary of Goa RTI Forum Ganpat Kurtikar, Senior Journalist Prakash Kamat, RTI Forum Member Sangeeta Naik, Yuva Goa’s Siddesh Bhagat discussed on various facets of the act. The seminar focused on effective use of the act for good governance in the state. During the interactive question and answer session participants raised many queries. They also  discussed and deliberated on several hurdles posed before common citizens who seek to use the act to address issues around him/her. Goa RTI forum and Yuva Goa assured full co-operation and help to citizens willing to take up social issues with the help of RTI. Hands on demo on filing online RTI application on https://rtionline.gov.in/ was also held during the event.

Four grass root level RTI activists who have been consistently using RTI for the betterment of the masses were felicitated during the program. Ramchandra Manjrekar from Usgao, Sandeep Haldankar from Pernem, Nishant Sawant from Marcel and Rajesh Naik from Marcaim were felicitated at the hands of SIC.

Members of public, officer bearers of socio political organisation Yuva Goa -Shailendra Velingkar, Parshuram Shetye, Viplav Prabhugaonkar, RTI activist Rajan Ghate etc were in attendance during the event.
