\u00a0~ The latest edition of the \u2018Goa Familia\u2019 project aims to document the present state of Goa in archive format for posterity.<\/p>\n

Goa Khabar: The future is always rooted in the present. The Archive of Potential (Goan) Futures, an exhibition featured under the curated segment, \u2018Goa Familia\u2019, as part of the ongoing 9th edition of the Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF) 2024, is doing just that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Curated by Lina Vincent and Akshay Mahajan, the project takes inspiration from Jacques Derrida’s \u2018Archive Fever\u2019, balancing the act of preserving Goa\u2019s cultural fabric while fostering public dialogue to envision possible futures, making a case for instance, through two contrasting photography exhibitions, one which focuses on heritage homes and the other which humorously critiques the rise in the trend of \u2018second homes\u2019 in Goa.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to focus on creating \u2018archives of now\u2019, and more than 20 individuals and collectives are a part of \u2018Archive of Potential (Goan) Futures\u2019, creating a variegated compilation of stories and images from across Goa. Someone will look back 10 years from now at this wonderful body of material that came together. We have shifted our focus, looking at a very contemporary space,\u201d said Vincent.<\/p>\n

Complementing their curatorial effort is a collaboration with the Museum of Christian Art (MoCA) for a special exhibition during the XVIII Exposition of the Sacred Relics of St Francis Xavier. \u201cIn true \u2018Goa Familia\u2019 style, we gathered personal stories, objects and memories from the community. The sub-exhibition at MoCA at the Church of Santa Monica, Old Goa, has already sparked deep connections and we’re thrilled to extend Serendipity Arts Festival 2024 to a new location at MoCA,\u201d Vincent said.<\/p>\n

According to Mahajan, \u2018Goa Familia\u2019 currently explores various aspects, like ace photographer Ulka Chauhan\u2019s book \u2018The Memory Keepers and Future Seekers\u2019, which documents heritage homes in Goa, focusing on the people who inhabit them and not just the architecture. Chauhan\u2019s exhibition is juxtaposed with Niharika Chauhan\u2019s \u2018Second Home\u2019, which critiques the phenomenon of second homes in Goa, highlighting how the state has become a hotspot for investment properties and holiday homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve created an immersive space where the past, present, and future intersect\u2014through innovative displays, storytelling, and interactive elements. It\u2019s a celebration of Goa\u2019s living archive\u2014an exploration of where we\u2019ve been, who we are, and where we might go,\u201d said Mahajan.<\/p>\n

In its earlier editions, \u2018Goa Familia\u2019 collaborated with SAF to document Goa\u2019s history through family archives and oral stories, leading to a series of exhibitions. The first, in 2019, was titled \u2018Goa Familia\u2019. After a pandemic break, the curation focused on the stories of Panaji, \u2018Families Are Like Rivers,\u2019 in 2022. The exhibition, \u2018Let The Sound Linger\u2019 (2023), explored music and theatre as core elements of Goan identity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
