{"id":97436,"date":"2024-10-16T19:42:40","date_gmt":"2024-10-16T14:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/?p=97436"},"modified":"2024-10-16T19:42:40","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T14:12:40","slug":"indian-navys-stitched-ship-to-embark-on-maiden-voyage-in-december-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/?p=97436","title":{"rendered":"Indian Navy\u2019s stitched ship to embark on maiden voyage in\u00a0 December 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0Goa Khabar : The Indian Navy\u2019s stitched ship will embark on its maiden ocean voyage from Mandvi in Gujarat to Muscat in Oman in December 2025.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was disclosed by Sanjeev Sanyal, member of the Prime Minister\u2019s economic advisory council at an event held at the International Centre Goa (ICG) on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ship which has been modeled after a 5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, stitched sailing ship painting found in the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra is being built at the Hodi Innovations shipyard on Divar island in Goa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanyal, whose brainchild this stitched ship project is, said that the ship should be ready by March 2025. The ship building which had commenced in September 2023 is being supervised by master shipwright, Babu Sankaran and his team from Kerala who are using the ancient method of stitching the ship together using choir ropes, fish oil, coconut fibres and red pigments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-97398\" src=\"https:\/\/goakhabar-com.preview.jikut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Z-Ad-2-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Z-Ad-2-293x300.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Z-Ad-2.jpg 622w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanyal who made a detailed presentation on India\u2019s 5000 year-old maritime history, even cited a reference to Marco Polo, where the Italian seafarer mentioned seeing Indian\u00a0 ships carrying a crew of 130 people in the 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. According to Sanyal, in modern times, stitching of ships was restricted to small fishing canoes used in Karnataka and racing boats in Kerala. \u201cThe Indian Navy project is aimed at keeping alive this ancient tradition and reviving the glory days of India\u2019s maritime history,\u201d Sanyal said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second speaker of the evening was Captain Saleh, retired officer of the Royal Navy of Oman, who has the distinction of commanding the \u201cJewel of Muscat\u201d a stitched ship modeled after an ancient Omani trading ship, whose wreckage was discovered off the coast of Indonesia in 1998.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Saleh with a multinational crew of 15 sailed from Muscat to Singapore on board the \u201cJewel of Muscat\u201d for five months in the year 2010. The Omani naval officer recounted the many storms and\u00a0 cyclones that his crew had to brave, which resulted in a broken mast and excess water on board during their voyage. Captain Saleh said, \u201cI am happy that India is embarking on this project.
