The \u201cstitched ship\u201d project is the brainchild of Sanyal and is backed by the ministry of culture and the Indian Navy.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Saleh had commanded a stitched ship of the Oman Navy on a five-month voyage from Muscat to Singapore in the year 2010. Both Mr. Sanyal and Captain Saleh will speak on the long-enduring tradition of stitched ships.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-97270\" src=\"https:\/\/goakhabar-com.preview.jikut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/9-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/9-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/www.goakhabar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/9.jpg 665w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Work has been underway at Goa\u2019s Divar Island since September 2023 to build a &amp;#39;stitched ship,&amp;#39; a dying Indian Ocean tradition in which vessels were built by stitching wooden planks with coir rope. Other than kettuvallams in Kerala, stitched boats can be found in Goa and in the Lakshadweep islands.<\/p>\n<p>The stitched ship is being built by the father-son duo of Ratnakar and Prathmesh Dandekar who are considered to be among India\u2019s premier boat builders. Babu Shankaran, who was involved in the Oman government\u2019s stitched ship project is also part of this project.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Navy\u2019s stitched ship is expected to be ready next year and will go on a voyage with a crew of thirteen members from Cuttack to Bali in Indonesia in November 2025.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Goa Khabar : The International Centre Goa (ICG) is organising a programme on India\u2019s \u2018Stitched Ship\u2019 project and the revival of this ancient, Indian ocean tradition on Tuesday, October 15 at 6pm.
