Goa Khabar: On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, a mental health awareness programme titled \u2018Let’s Talk About Mental Health\u2019 was held on Tuesday at the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Mapusa by District Mental Health Program North Goa and North District Hospital. Celebrated annually on October 10, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness about mental health and promote overall well-being.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Organised by District Mental Health Program North Goa and North District Hospital, the main objective of the programme was to create awareness about mental health, common mental health disorders, and their symptoms. The chief guest for the programme was Deputy Speaker and MLA of Mapusa Constituency, Joshua De Souza. Also present were Nodal Officer District, Dr. Rajesh Dhume, Senior Psychiatrist at North District Hospital, Dr. Shaheen Sayyed and chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council Priya Mishal.<\/div>\n

Addressing the gathering, De Souza, shared his personal experience with mental health and seeking professional help. \u201cWe often get check-ups for our bodies when we feel unwell, we tend to forget to take care of our mental well-being,\u201d he said, expressing concern that mental health awareness in Goa is not as advanced as it should be compared to the rest of the world. De Souza further acknowledged that many people are hesitant to openly admit that they need to be diagnosed or seek professional help due to the fear of being judged. However, he reassured, that it is normal to seek help and that they are not alone.<\/div>\n

He emphasized that counseling has positively impacted his life in numerous ways. \u201cBy being able to share and speak openly, I discovered a lot about myself, which has greatly contributed to my political career and personal growth. De Souza stated that programs focused on mental health are crucial, and he will always support such causes.<\/div>\n

The resource person, psychiatrist Dr. Tanvi Pednekar, conducted an informative session on mental health disorders, covering sensitive topics and providing guidance on how to support individuals struggling with mental health issues and practice self-care. She also highlighted the various mental health services available in North Goa. The audience actively participated in the session, engaging in discussions and asking questions.<\/div>\n
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by a psychologist from the District Mental Health Program, Durga Chari, expressing gratitude to all participants and stakeholders involved.<\/div>\n
