Goa Khabar:<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Drishti Marine,\u00a0Goa\u2019s lifesaving force of 400 lifesavers completed the annual intensive refresher training programme\u00a0conducted\u00a0over\u00a0the course of\u00a02\u00a0months\u00a0with sessions being held in north and south Goa.\u00a0The training programme held over two weeks included\u00a0emergency lifesaving responses,\u00a0rigorous physical drills,\u00a0soft communication skills and effective mechanisms to avoid conflict\u00a0with visitors to the beach especially tourists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Explained Navin Awasthi, Operations Head, Drishti Marine,\u00a0\u201cEvery year the entire lifesaving force go through a refresher programme to ensure\u00a0they are\u00a0up to date.\u00a0T<\/span>he skills needed to be an efficient lifeguard includes knowledge of CPR and first aid, beach operations,\u00a0jet\u00a0ski operation, use of rescue tube, board and various rescue techniques in addition to leadership and soft skills. Most importantly the candidates need to be physically fit and be able to swim 400 metres in under 11 minutes<\/span>. The<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0emphasis is placed on First aid and CPR since the victim has a short window of\u00a0three to four\u00a0minutes between surviving and being declared clinically dead. Those first few minutes of a person’s life are critical. That is why we concentrate on emergency response services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The sessions included in-depth classes and live demonstrations in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and handling of\u00a0oxygen\u00a0cylinders.\u00a0Navin added, \u201cThe lifeguard is\u00a0the\u00a0first emergency responder on the beach.\u00a0Every\u00a0tower is equipped with an AED, CPR, and an O2 cylinder, which provides immediate\u00a0first aid\u00a0to the victim until 108\u00a0ambulance\u00a0services arrive.\u201d\u00a0The lifesavers were taken through drills to better equip the lifesavers to operate the emergency response kits placed in the towers on the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to emergency response the lifesavers were taken through rigorous physical drills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Santano Fernandes, an instructor\u00a0with Drishti said,\u00a0\u201c<\/span>The intensive programme\u00a0included, among other things, 400-meter swim tests, endurance swim workouts, stroke corrections, three- and five-meter jumps, underwater swimming, and fundamental rescue tube and board abilities. Lessons on surf awareness, beach conditions, rip currents,\u00a0safety signs, flag systems\u00a0and marine dangers\u00a0were\u00a0covered in the classroom sessions\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Goa\u2019s popular\u00a0beaches\u00a0are packed to capacity with visitors including tourists.\u00a0The training programme included a special capsule on effective communication and soft skills\u00a0in an effort to\u00a0engage in a positive manner with visitors, especially tourists. Santano explained, \u201cCommunication is critical. Appropriate use of\u00a0body language for communication,\u00a0being police and respectful\u00a0to visitors to the beaches,\u00a0handling problems professionally,\u00a0speaking and acting in a way that is appropriate for the situation\u00a0and\u00a0controlling emotions,\u00a0help the lifesavers handle themselves in challenging situations\u00a0which may arise\u00a0with visitors, especially tourists\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Baga based lifesaver Pooja Bude agrees. \u201cCommunication is an effective catalyst in de-escalating incidents at the beach. The beaches are populated with tourists from all over India, hence the lifesavers must overcome significant language barriers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Drishti\u00a0follows\u00a0the course syllabus as recommended by the Special Rescue Training Academy (SRTA).
