Uday Bhembre as being insulting to the legendary Konkani icon Shenoi Goembab. Pai Cacode said that the article also contains caste-laden and derogatory references that have deeply offended a particular community.

Pai Cacode pointed out that throughout the article, Datta Naik has repeatedly used the expressions “Baman” and “Bamani” in a pejorative and derogatory context while referring to Shenoi Goembab and others. He said that the repeated use of such terminology goes beyond fair criticism or academic debate and creates the impression of targeting an entire community on the basis of caste identity. “No community should be subjected to ridicule or stereotyping through caste-based references in public discourse,” he said.

He further stated that this is not the first occasion on which Datta Naik has made remarks hurting the sentiments of particular sections of society. In the past, he had described temples and maths as ‘Lootaru’ (dacoits), causing widespread resentment among people who revere these religious and cultural institutions. According to Pai Cacode, a pattern appears to be emerging where faith, traditions and certain communities are repeatedly singled out for criticism and ridicule.

Vishal Pai Cacode said that while every citizen has the constitutional right to hold personal beliefs, including atheistic views, nobody has the right to insult or demean those who believe in God, Swamijis, religious institutions and age-old traditions. Equally, freedom of expression cannot be used as a shield for making casteist remarks or for using terminology that demeans an entire community. Public figures and office-bearers of political parties have a greater responsibility to promote harmony and mutual respect.

Stating that Datta Naik is not merely a writer but the Treasurer of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, Pai Cacode said that the silence of the Congress leadership on the issue would only create an impression that the party is unwilling to distance itself from casteist and derogatory remarks. He therefore urged the GPCC to issue an unambiguous statement clarifying whether it condemns the contents of the article or endorses the views expressed in it. “The people of Goa and the Congress workers of the State deserve a clear answer,” he said.

Goa Khabar: Political Analyst and Congress loyalist Vishal Pai Cacode has called upon the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) to immediately clarify its stand on the controversial article written by its Treasurer, Datta Damodar Naik, which has been strongly condemned by the Konkani Bhasha Mandal, the Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Parishad and senior litterateur Adv.
