Goa Khabar:Contributing towards efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic and as a gesture of solidarity towards the local populace under distress during the nationwide lockdown, The Indian Navy under the Goa Naval Area has undertaken relief measures to provide basic essential commodities to the poor & needy families comprising daily wagers, migrant labourers and low income families in and around Vasco. Till now nearly 400 families have been given dry rations.
A team of GNA led by Flag Officer Goa Area, R Admiral Philipose G. Pynumootil, carried out the relief measures. Mr Tejendra Lawande , Past Chair of CII-Young Indians Goa, has complimented the efforts by identifying the distressed areas and their needs in and around Vasco and helping reach these families. Dry ration sufficient for a family was distributed in Mangoor, Mormugao, Vasco, Chicalim & Bogmalo Areas. Shri Milind Naik,Minister for Urban Development, Shri Carlos Almeida,Vasco MLA & Shri Mauvin Goudinho, Minister for Panchayats guided the relief measures. Sarpanch of Chicalim, Seby Pereira, Panch members of Chicalim & Bogmalo Panchayat and Councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council, Mr Dilip Kamat, Miss Arshana Shah and members of Rotary Club of Vasco Port Town took active part in the operation. The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Indian Navy for their act of kindness and benevolence.
The Goa Navy area has always extended their voluntary support for rescue and relief measures to the State in times of distress. The correspondent understands that the Navy has been prepared to address any eventuality that the present crisis may throw up. The Navy has been assisting the Goa Government in transporting the samples of suspected COVID patients to Pune for tests.
The rations were donated by the personnel of the GNA. The FOGA, Rear Admiral Philipose has said that the relief operation will continue as per the assessments being made on ground. Mr Lawande has also said that many citizens of Vasco have contacted him with donations in kind for the relief operations and that the GNA has obliged by extending voluntarily their support infrastructure for distribution of the rations as and when called upon . He has expressed his deepest appreciation of the Goa Naval Area’s initiative and has said that the Forces have always stood by the Countrymen in times of distress. The Indian Navy is also supplying cooked food to the homeless at identified areas.
