Goa Khabar : On the eve of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day, beach cleaning programme was conducted befittingly at Velsao Beach on September 18, 2021. This program was conducted by Vasco-based the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. of India. This activity was a part of the Swachh Sagar (Clean Seas) Campaign of the MoES to commemorate the 75 years of Indian Independence (Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsava). Over 50 participants from the NCPOR actively participated in this programme.
About 60 kilograms of trash materials including plastics, glass bottles, nylon ropes, and several other trash materials were removed from the beach and handed over to the Department of Tourism, Govt. of Goa. The programme was Guided by Dr. M. Ravichandran, Director NCPOR, and coordinated by Dr. S. C. Tripathy, Scientist-F and Mr. V. S. Samy, Scientist-F from the NCPOR. To create awareness among the locals, interaction with the locals as well as tourists were conducted to convey the message and motivation of “Swachhata Hi Seva”. It is imperative to keep our seas around us clean and plastic free, which is gradually becoming a threat to the marine environment and is the one of the main causes of costal pollution in India.
