19 Rescued, including five foreigners, from drowning off Goa beaches last weekend

Goa Khabar : Nineteen people, including five foreigners, were rescued from drowning by Drishti Marine lifesavers off Goa’s beaches over the weekend, as strong rip tides and currents swept through the waters. Four other beachgoers had to be treated and administered first aid during the same period. 

Arambol : Two Kazakhstani couples, ignoring warnings from on-duty lifesaver Akshan Talkar, were swept 50 metres into the sea by a rip current. Talkar, armed with a rescue tube, jumped in to save them, while fellow lifesaver Manoj Parab arrived with a rescue board. Together, they brought the tourists safely ashore.

Morjim : A middle-aged Russian couple, aged 57 and 60, was rescued by Drishti Marine lifesavers after being dragged 40 metres into the sea by a sudden flash rip current, which suddenly forms in the sea, endangering swimmers. Lifesaver Shant Parab heard their calls for help and sent a rescue alert to the lifeguard tower. With assistance from Mahadev, who arrived with a rescue tube, they secured the couple on a rescue board and brought them safely ashore.

Palolem : At Palolem river, a 28-year-old from Ponda was rescued by a friend after nearly drowning. Drishti Marine lifesavers Sarvesh Govekar, Pradeep Velip, Amol Painginkar and Sameer Kankonkar provided critical aid, clearing his airway, administering oxygen and stabilising him before handing him to medical emergency services.

Calangute : Multiple rescues at Calangute beach saved tourists from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. A 14-year-old from Tamil Nadu caught in a rip current was rescued by lifesavers Rakesh Kumar and Sanjay Yadav. In a freak incident, five people, including two from Maharashtra and three from Andhra Pradesh, were saved by Rakesh Kumar, Sanjay Yadav, Umesh Madaikar and Hari Chopdekar after a drowning attempt endangered the entire group. The incident occurred after one person from the group started drowning, before others known to him rushed to his aid, inadvertently coming precariously close to drowning themselves.

Candolim : Two Kashmiri men in their mid-thirties were rescued from a rip current off Candolim beach. Drishti Marine lifesavers Diwakar Desai and Suraj Sawant used a rescue board, assisted by Jayprakash and Yogendra Singh with rescue tubes, to safely bring the duo back to shore.

Baga : A 13-year-old Russian girl caught in a rip current off the beach was rescued by lifesaver Sushant Gaonkar with a rescue board, after he spotted the girl struggling to swim in the water.

Mandrem : Six tourists from Jaipur were caught in a rip current, with five managing to return ashore at Mandrem beach. A 27-year-old, however, struggled and began drowning. Lifesaver Karan Tandel used a rescue board while Yuvraj Revankar deployed a jetski, successfully securing the individual and bringing him safely back to shore.

Baina : A tourist’s finger was cut on a propeller while alighting from a sightseeing boat at Baina beach. The tourist approached the nearby lifesaver tower for assistance and was administered first aid.

Agonda : A 32-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy, both from Goa, were stung by a jellyfish off Agonda beach. Both were administered first aid on the spot by a Drishti Marine lifesaver.
