Salvador do Mundo wins All Goa Elite & U-19 State Boxing Championship Title

Goa Khabar: The All-Goa Elite and U-19 State Boxing Championship held from October 8-10, 2024, at the Boxing Hall in Peddem came to a successful end.

The three-day event saw enthusiastic participation from 92 boxers from across the state, from 13 centres taking part.

With 6 golds, and 4 silver RCC SDM won the championship with 26 points. The team was coached by Chitabaram Naik.

Coming in second was Jab and Box with 3 gold and 4 silver medals with 17 points and coming in close in third position was RCC Peddem with 15 points coached by Mr. Nilesh Khanolkar.

The three-day event saw some exciting bouts, which is also a selection for the Elite Men’s and Women’s camp ahead of the nationals in November.

Speaking at the championship, President of GABA, Francis Viegas said: “I am satisfied to see a decent number of Elite and U-19 boxers participate in our state championship. It’s heartening to see such display of skill and talent at this State Championship. We are always looking to improve our performances at the national championships and so, this state championship will allow us to plan the training camp for the Elite Nationals which will commence soon so we can have intensive training. Our coaches are doing a commendable job, and we wish to diversify boxing across other parts of Goa too.”

An exciting bout of the evening was fought between Laxman Toralkar of RCC Peddem and Ashok Chawan of RCC SDM. It was very well fought between two exceptionally good boxers, who used all technic and strength which made audience and everyone to sit on edge of their seats. The winner declared by split decision was Toralkar of RCC Peddem.

Another bout that got the crowd excited was between Umesh Chawhan of RCC Peddem   and Sohan Salgaokar of RCC SDM. This was a closely fought bout, where Umesh used his experience specially in the last round to get the better of Sohan and won the bout on points decision.

The chief Guest for the finals was Assistant Director (Programme), Sports Authority of Goa, Vivek Pawar.

The event saw brilliant organisation by the EC members of GABA led by secretary, Hemant Nagwenkar.

Goa Amateur Boxing Association plans to organize regular sparring competitions to provide a platform for boxers and prepare them for nationals and other invitational championships.
