Goa Khabar : An urgent appeal for financial assistance was issued today as two more houses collapsed in the communities of Dongrim and Madur, with torrential rain still pouncing on the area. This is the latest disaster in turning families homeless, with many awaiting assistance from the government and civil society.
The incessant rainfall in the last week has paralysed life in these Goan villages, forcing local authorities to classify the situation as critical. Residents at Dongrim and Madur witnessed their homes and livelihoods being washed away in floods amidst the relentless downpour.
MLA Viresh Borkar, representing the constituencies affected by this mishap, has taken personal initiative with the movement to garner support for the dispossessed families in dire need of emergency funds to rebuild their lives. According to MLA Borkar, “It’s not just about rebuilding homes. It’s about restoring dignity and security to our people. We are facing a humanitarian crisis, and every second counts.”
The two houses that succumbed to the relentless rain were those of the Gomes and Naik families, who lost not only their shelters but also their belongings and cattle for farming, which formed an intrinsic part of their agrarian way of life. They are amongst many yearning for shelter, food, and medication.
The local-level disaster management officials have been working relentlessly to provide temporary relief in terms of shelter and food. However, the scale of destruction calls for a more intense response. Scores of households are affected, and critical infrastructure is compromised; hence, the need for financial support cannot be ruled out.
MLA Borkar has already reached out to the state and central governments, pleading for expedited assistance. In a heartening update, several local NGOs and community groups have begun pooling resources to support the beleaguered villagers. However, without substantial and immediate emergency funds, the relief efforts will not suffice.
The call to action from the MLA underlines the need for a connected, multi-dimensional effort at succor. “We need the support of every citizen, corporate, and philanthropic entity to help us through this ordeal,” Borkar exhorted. “It is in times like these that the fabric of our unity and empathy gets tested. Let us rise to the occasion and be able to show the real strength of our communal spirit.”
Indeed, solidarity is the least that can be extended in the wake of reports coming in of forecasts indicating an increase of more rainfall in the days ahead. A race against time, the means through which urgent financial assistance is going to be provided tantamounts to a lifeline to Dongrim and Madur afflicted citizens. Certainly in the face of adversity, the plea of MLA Borkar is deeply touching and immediate in terms of stirring compassion and acting towards the same.
