Pertuzumab-Trastuzumab Fixed Drug Combination Offers Enhanced Benefits for Breast Cancer Patients
Goa Khabar:Feb 04, 2024 Sunday, In a pioneering move coinciding with World Cancer Day, Goa Medical College (GMC) became the first Government Hospital in the Country to administer Pertuzumab, a novel addition to the treatment protocol for a subset of breast cancer patients exhibiting overexpression of the Her2 protein free of charge.
Over the past five years, GMC has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive care to Her2 positive breast cancer patients, employing the antibody trastuzumab in conjunction with chemotherapy. Recognizing the evolving landscape of cancer therapeutics, the medical community at GMC has now incorporated Pertuzumab, a second antibody, into the treatment regimen.
The Pertuzumab-Trastuzumab Fixed Drug Combination for Subcutaneous Use represents a significant advancement in cancer care. This injectable formulation is administered subcutaneously in the thigh, offering a streamlined alternative to the conventional hour-long intravenous drip. This approach not only enhances patient comfort but also ensures a more efficient delivery of the therapeutic agents.
Commencing from the 4th of February 2024, World Cancer Day, GMC will make this cutting-edge drug available to patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer before undergoing surgery. The strategic timing of this introduction underscores our commitment to advancing cancer treatment and marking a pivotal moment in the fight against breast cancer.
Dr. Anupama Borkar HOD Oncology, expressed her optimism about the positive impact of this new treatment modality. “We believe that the Pertuzumab-Trastuzumab Fixed Drug Combination will not only contribute to the efficacy of breast cancer treatment but also simplify the therapeutic process for our patients. The subcutaneous administration reduces the treatment duration and offers a more patient-friendly experience,” said Dr. Borkar.
This progressive step aligns with GMC’s mission to continually enhance patient care and reflects the institution’s dedication to staying abreast of advancements in medical science. By embracing this innovative treatment option, GMC aims to make a significant stride in the battle against breast cancer and improve the quality of life for affected individuals.
