Goa Khabar:The 37th National Games concluded on November 8 at the Peddem Stadium in Goa, with the host team securing 9 medals in boxing, including 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. The Goa boxers displayed their skills against some of the best boxers from across the country, and made their state proud.
The gold medalists from Goa were Sakshi in the Elite Women 48-50kg Light Fly category, Rajat in the Elite Men 67-71kg Light Middle category, and Gaurav Chouhan in the Elite Men 92+kg Super Heavy category. Sakshi defeated Malika from Madhya Pradesh by a unanimous decision of 5:0, Rajat edged out Akash from SSCB by a close margin of 4:3, and Gaurav overcame Sawan Gill from Chandigarh.

The silver medalists from Goa were Akash Gorkha in the Elite Men 60-63.5kg Light Welter category, Lokesh in the Elite Men 75-80kg Light Heavy category, and Sanamacha Chanu in the Elite Women 70-75kg Middle category. Akash lost to Manish Kaushik from SSCB by a score of 2:3, Lokesh was defeated by Sanjay from SSCB by a score of 1:4, and Sanamacha Chanu was outclassed by Saweety Boora from Haryana by a score of 0:5.
The bronze medalists from Goa were AK Roshanzamir in the Elite Men 48-51kg Fly category, Ayush Sai in the Elite Men 86-92kg Heavy category, and Niharika in the Elite Women 57-60kg Light category. They all reached the semi-finals of their respective categories, but could not advance to the finals.
The gold medalists from Goa expressed their happiness for winning the medals for their state. Talking about her journey, Sakshi said, “I’m feeling great about winning gold for Goa. During my time here I’ve learnt new things. I would like to dedicate this victory to the country, Goa and my parents.” Rajat, who put up an outstanding performance with his counterpunches and double attacks said, “I worked hard and was confident that my hard work would pay off. I’m now preparing for the upcoming National Championship to be held in Shillong. I am thankful to the host team Goa for taking me in.” Gaurav, who won the bout with a combination of punches, also said that he was ready to participate in the upcoming National Championship as well.
The National Games happening in Goa was a dream for International Technical Official Lenny DGama, who had been waiting for a long time to witness a major tournament in his home state. The last time Goa hosted a national-level event was in 2009, when the Sub Junior Nationals were held. This year, Goa finally got the chance to showcase its sporting infrastructure and potential to the rest of the country.
The coach of the Goa boxing team, Chitambaram Naik, said, “I’m happy with the overall performance of all the boxers who participated in the 37th National Games. They have done extremely well. GABA has provided us with all the necessary assistance required to train the boxers.”
The working President of Goa Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Ninil Dsouza congratulated the boxing team from Goa for securing 9 medals. He said, “I am really happy with the overall results. Our boxers have done their best which is visible through their performance. The Association will continue working on improving the boxing scene in the state.”
