Goa Crime Branch foils gold smuggling bid; Two held with 1.3 kg liquid gold worth ₹1.5 crore

Goa Khabar : In a major anti-smuggling operation, the Goa Crime Branch foiled an attempt to smuggle approximately 1.300 kg of liquid gold worth around ₹1.5 crore, arresting two persons at Sukhe Kulan, Dhargal, in North Goa.

The operation was carried out under the overall supervision of Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rahul Gupta, IPS, by a Crime Branch team led by Police Inspector Nikhil Palekar.

The arrested accused have been identified as Hassan Niyaz (35) and Muhammed Khunhi (57), both natives of Kasaragod, Kerala.

According to the Crime Branch, preliminary investigation based on secret information revealed that Hassan Niyaz had arrived in Goa from Dubai on a Qatar Airways flight carrying the liquid gold consignment. Muhammed Khunhi had travelled from Kasaragod to Margao by train before proceeding to Mopa Airport, where he allegedly received the consignment from Hassan Niyaz.

The two accused later travelled together and were intercepted by the Crime Branch team at Sukhe Kulan, Dhargal.

During a lawful search conducted in the presence of panch witnesses, police discovered that the liquid gold had been concealed inside specially stitched cavities in the banyans and undergarments worn by both accused. The concealed gold was recovered and seized after completing all legal formalities.

The seized consignment weighed approximately 1.300 kg, with an estimated market value of ₹1.5 crore.

The accused are currently in the custody of the Crime Branch and are being handed over to the Customs Department, Mormugao, for further investigation and legal action under the provisions of the Customs Act and other applicable laws.

The successful operation was carried out by the Crime Branch team led by PI Nikhil Palekar, along with HC Jayesh Tari, PC Sandesh Volvoikar, PC Dattatraya Shet Verenkar, PC Subha Gaonkar and PC Jatish Naik, under the guidance of SP Rahul Gupta, IPS, SP Jivba Dalvi, PI Tushar Lotliker, and the overall supervision of DIG Ved Prakash Surya.
