Goa Khabar: Independent politician and former State badminton player Dattaprasad Naik, along with CCP Corporator Leonid Furtado, Adv. Vishnu Naik, and Mangesh Vernekar, on Tuesday criticised the Goa Government’s approach towards sports infrastructure, alleging that public sports facilities are increasingly being commercialised instead of serving athletes.

Addressing a press conference, the leaders alleged that the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium, originally built for indoor sports, has been transformed into a venue for exhibitions and entertainment events, compromising its primary purpose.

They also opposed the proposed leasing of the Campal Sports Ground, stating that sports infrastructure developed with taxpayers’ money should remain dedicated to athletes and the people of Goa, rather than being used for private commercial interests.

The delegation demanded complete transparency in the leasing process, public consultation before any final decision is taken, and safeguards to ensure affordable and regular access for athletes, schools, colleges, and local sports clubs.

Emphasising the importance of preserving public sports facilities, the leaders said that sports infrastructure is an investment in youth development and public welfare and should continue to serve its intended purpose.
