1,300 odd innocent people died in road accident

Goa Khabar : Holding the BJP government responsible for the deaths of around 1,300 innocent people due to road accidents in the last five years, Congress Spokesperson Samil Volvoikar has demanded to take measures to save lives of public.

Addressing a press conference at Congress House, Panaji, Volvoikar alleged that the BJP government is more interested in organizing events than in stopping road accidents. Congress Spokespersons Vivek D’Silva and Menino Da Cruz were also present.

He said the insensitive BJP government has failed to tackle fatal road accidents. “From 2021 to January 2026 alone, over 1,300 fatal accidents have been registered in the state. This data is not prepared by the Congress party, it is government data available on the Goa Assembly portal.” he pointed out.

“Fatalities are not stopping. In the last four months, many fatal accidents have occurred and innocent people have lost their lives. Every passing day, one person is dying on the roads. But the government is doing nothing. It is busy with events,” Volvoikar said.

He further alleged that heavy vehicles entering the state with loads beyond permissible limits move freely by paying haftas. “These heavy vehicles pose a danger to other vehicles. They go out of control due to excess load. But no action is taken against them because hafta is involved,” Volvoikar said.

Volvoikar said that there is dearth of staff in police department. “Traffic police should manage the traffic, but they are not seen doing their duties. There are no proper signages in villages and other places. Government has miserably failed to bring these measures,” he said.

“The people of Goa deserve safe roads and accountable governance. Instead, they are left with hollow notifications, promises, and rising deaths. The government’s failure to act decisively has turned Goa’s roads into death traps, and every life lost is a grim reminder of systemic negligence,” he said.

“It is high time the government moves beyond paperwork and takes concrete, transparent, and time-bound measures to save lives,” the Congress leader added.

He said the government has failed to mend potholes on roads. “It has also failed to clear black spots and activate AI cameras. BJP Government has also failed in creating quality road infrastructure. The road works are sub-standard and road engineering is not proper,”he alleged.
