Goa Khabar : Goa Government has intensified monsoon preparedness measures for 2026 following a review meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) held at Mantralaya, Porvorim under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. The discussions focused on preparedness at State, District, and Taluka levels, strengthening emergency response systems, and ensuring coordinated action to minimise loss of life and property during the monsoon season.

Preparedness measures across departments were reviewed, including functioning of Emergency Operation Centres and Control Rooms operating round-the-clock with dedicated manpower. More than ₹4 crore has been allocated for local-level preparedness works, while over ₹6.23 crore has been sanctioned towards alternate ferry ramp infrastructure at Divar Island to improve emergency connectivity. Four advanced ambulances have been deployed on National Highways, a Mini Water Tender has been procured for emergency response, and over 400 Aapda Mitra and Aapda Sakhi volunteers have been trained and insured for disaster management support. Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) response time has also been reduced from 18 minutes to 9 minutes.

Addressing officials during the review, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant said, “All concerned departments should make sure that no life is lost due to any disaster.” He directed authorities to strengthen preventive measures, including installation of warning signboards at accident-prone areas, identification of hazardous locations, action against dilapidated structures, and restrictions on swimming in abandoned mining pits. He further emphasised effective utilisation of Aapda Mitra volunteers along with NCC, NSS, Scouts and Guides during emergency situations.

The review also covered preparedness related to weather forecasting, emergency communication systems, vector-borne diseases, stocking of essential medicines, animal rescue arrangements, supply of fodder, availability of basic essentials, forest fire management, and emergency boat response systems. Departments were instructed to identify weak electric poles, hanging wires, hazardous trees, and dangerous hoardings. Priority was also given to desilting drains, nullahs, lakes, and water bodies, along with monitoring flood-prone and landslide-vulnerable areas.

During the press briefing, it was informed that all departments are coordinating closely with the Indian Meteorological Department for timely weather alerts and early warnings. Road cutting activities have been restricted during the monsoon period, while dedicated disaster management funds have been provided to North Goa, South Goa, and Kushavati Collectors for emergency preparedness and response. CM Dr. Sawant also appreciated the Indian Coast Guard for strengthening coastal preparedness through Sagar Kavach. Emergency helpline numbers have also been issued for public assistance during emergencies.

The initiatives reflect the Government’s focus on strengthening preparedness systems, improving response capabilities, and ensuring greater public safety during the monsoon season. Enhanced coordination among departments, faster emergency response mechanisms, and community participation remain central to the State’s disaster management approach.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Dr. V. Candavelou; Director General of Police; Principal Chief Conservator of Forests; Secretary, Revenue; Collectors of North Goa and South Goa; officials of the Indian Coast Guard; Heads of Departments, Directors, and senior Government officials.
