Goa Khabar:The Goa Football Association, in association with Sesa Football Academy, marked International Women’s Day in fitting fashion by hosting the inaugural Queen’s Cup a celebratory 5v5 women’s football tournament held at Sirsaim, Goa. The one-day festival brought together women footballers from across the region, with participants from neighbouring states joining Goa’s own to make the occasion a truly inclusive celebration of the women’s game.
Six teams took part in the tournament – Goa Queens, Goa United, Goa Strikers, Goa Blasters and two sides representing Kerala competing across the day in a lively and spirited festival of football that showcased the growing strength and depth of women’s football in the region.
The event served as a powerful statement of intent from the GFA that women’s football in Goa is not merely an afterthought, but a priority. With Sesa FA providing the platform and infrastructure at Sirsaim, the Queen’s Cup was a celebration of everything the women’s game stands for: passion, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
Speaking on the occasion, GFA President Dr. Caitano Fernandes said:
“Today is not just about football it is about recognising the immense talent, courage, and dedication that our women bring to this sport every single day. The Queen’s Cup is our commitment to ensuring that women’s football in Goa continues to grow, to thrive and to inspire. We are proud to stand alongside Sesa FA in creating this platform and we hope this becomes a tradition that grows bigger and stronger with every passing year.”
Chairperson of Women’s Committee and Executive member, Maymol Rocky, a towering figure in Indian women’s football, graced the event and expressed her delight at seeing so many women take to the pitch in celebration of the day. Her presence at the Queen’s Cup was a source of great inspiration for the participating players many of whom look up to her as a role model and a symbol of what dedication and hard work in Indian women’s football can achieve.
GFA reaffirms its commitment to developing, promoting, and nurturing women’s football across Goa and pledges to continue creating meaningful opportunities for women at all levels of the game.
