“The discrepancy in government documents points towards a big scam in this project!” – Valmiki Naik
“If villagers are Opposing the Mirabag Barrage, Who is to Benefit from This Project?” – Sandesh Teleikar-Dessai Questions Government
Goa Khabar:The Aam Aadmi Party has extended active support to the ongoing protest against the proposed barrage project at Mirabag in Sanvordem, strengthening the momentum of the agitation against the government.
AAP Goa State President Valmiki Naik, Senior Vice President Sandesh Teleikar-Dessai, Rajesh Gaonkar, and Arjun Gurav visited the protest site on 18th Feb to express their solidarity.
Speaking on the occasion, Valmiki Naik said that one anti-people project after another by the BJP government is being exposed. He alleged that the ₹280-crore barrage project appears more like a scam than a development initiative. He pointed out that despite two years passing, there has been no clarity about the project’s scope or technical details.
““Why is there no responsible official or engineer explaining the project layout? If people are opposing it, who exactly will benefit from this project? This appears to be another scam under the WRD Minister Mr. Subhash Shirodkar. It may be recalled that Shirodkar was a Congress MLA in 2018, when the BJP Govt mysteriously acquired 2 lakh sq mts of land from him at an exorbitant rate of almost ten times the prevailing market rate. Shirodkar joined the BJP just a few weeks after this transaction. This is a new scam to provide water for industrialist friends of the BJP, at a cost of not just the inflated tender of Rs. 280 crores, but also at the cost of 500 homes, River Zuari ecology, and the religious sentiments of villagers of 9 villages” he said.
Senior Vice President Sandesh Teleikar-Dessai strongly criticised the government, highlighting administrative pressure and alleged corruption. He said no government official has met the protesters in the past nine to ten days.
“Every village has now become a land of resistance, and AAP will support this movement till the end. Goans are now awake and will rise against the government,” he said.
Villagers fear that more than 500 homes could be affected by the project. Professionals, lawyers and several social organisations have also joined the protest, extending their support to the movement against the barrage project.
