Goa Khabar : Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Wednesday, during Zero Hour, raised issue of Air Quality Index in major towns namely Panaji, Porvorim, Mormugao, Bambolim reporting “Unhealthy” levels in the first week of January, 2026.

He said that the levels of AQI were in the range of 163 to 178 in these four major towns. Though the trend in the current week shows improvement, the AQI levels still continue to be Poor or Moderate as the index is in the range of 100 and above.

“This has put the people to health risks like respiratory, heart diseases and premature deaths. I have sought response from the government to reduce the pollution levels taking serious note of the AQI levels above 100,” Alemao said.

Alemao said that the rising pollution levels have led to a public perception that unchecked urbanisation, traffic congestion, construction activity, and pollution-intensive projects are pushing Goa towards conditions similar to highly polluted cities.
