Goa Khabar:The Goa Football Association (GFA) marked a deeply significant moment for Goan football as the West Stand at the iconic Nehru Stadium Fatorda was formally named after the late former Sports Minister Shri Francisco Monte Cruz.

The renaming ceremony took place in the evening, with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and other respected leaders in attendance. The event came just before the AFC Asian Cup 2027 final round qualifier between India and Singapore.

The dedication served as a long-awaited tribute to a man who was truly synonymous with the stadium. As Sports Minister in the late 1980s, Francisco Monte Cruz was the driving force behind Fatorda stadium’s construction. He demonstrated remarkable vision and determination, securing the Nehru Cup for Goa and assuring the All India Football Federation (AIFF) that a world-class facility would be ready swiftly.

He even set up his office on-site during construction. The stadium was completed in an astonishing eight months, opening on January 19, 1989. This monumental effort created a lasting home for both Goan and Indian football.

Francisco Monte Cruz, former Sports Minister, worked tirelessly for the game and for the love of football. He showed immense dedication in building this stadium, and for that, we are naming this main stand in recognition of his contribution.” stated Dr Pramod Sawant Chief Minister of Goa.

“Today our football community honoured a true pioneer. Shri Francisco Monte Cruz did not just build a stadium, he built a home for all of us,” a GFA official stated. “Every match, every cheer, every moment of passion here came from his original courage and work. Though he passed last year, his spirit will now live in the very stands he created. We hope the Francisco Monte Cruz Stand inspires future generations to match his fierce dedication.”
