Goa Khabar : A major stretch of the Curchorem–Quepem main road at Bawas (ward 12) was left covered with coconut husks and other waste on Tuesday morning, creating dangerous conditions for commuters, particularly two-wheeler riders. Several motorists struggled to navigate the slippery and debris-strewn surface, prompting outrage from residents.

Locals expressed strong resentment against the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC), accusing it of negligence and failing to carry out its usual pre-monsoon preparedness measures. According to inquiries, the debris was washed onto the road by rainwater because roadside drains had not been cleaned this year.

In the past, CCMC would undertake drain-cleaning work before the onset of monsoon to prevent such hazards. However, Chairperson Prasanna Bhende clarified that the earlier practice has been discontinued. Instead, councillors are now assigned labourers throughout the year and are individually responsible for ensuring their respective ward drains are cleaned on time.

Residents, however, said the negligence this year has put daily commuters at risk and demanded immediate action to clear the road and restore safe passage.
