Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva Call for Urgent Action on Water Pollution, Road Safety, and Climate Resilience
Goa khabar:In a strong pitch for sustainable development and public safety, AAP MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva highlighted a series of pressing issues affecting Goa’s environment, health, and infrastructure.
Speaking in the Assembly, MLA Venzy Viegas expressed grave concern over the health issues and water contamination in Lamgaon, Bicholim, resulting from mining activities. He pointed to rising cases of lung diseases and polluted water bodies, and called for a balanced approach that safeguards both public health and the livelihoods of mining-dependent families.
Supporting a private member resolution, Viegas also emphasized the urgent need for a scientific flood mitigation strategy, citing unregulated development as a driver of climate change and erratic rainfall. He urged the government to prioritize desilting of dams, managing coastal creeks, and mapping flood-prone areas to better prepare for natural disasters.
Meanwhile, MLA Cruz Silva raised alarm over the deterioration of traditional wells and water sources in Velim, warning of the impact on both water security and cultural heritage. He called for a comprehensive survey, allocation of restoration funds, and community-based maintenance policies, along with awareness campaigns to stop waste dumping and promote conservation.
On the issue of road safety, Cruz Silva also flagged the rise in accidents on the Velim-Betul bridge, blaming it on overspeeding rent-a-cab vehicles. He urged the Chief Minister to regulate the rent-a-cab sector and implement stricter road safety measures.
Both MLAs underscored the need for scientific planning and citizen-centric governance to address the state’s growing environmental and infrastructural challenges.
