Goa Khabar : MLA Viresh Borkar has sounded an alarm over the flooding of agricultural fields with sewage water in Agassaim and Goa Velha, located in the St. Andre constituency. In a tweet addressed to the Goa Government, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), and the Water Resources Department, Borkar warned that the crisis is threatening farmers’ livelihoods, destroying aquatic life, and putting public health at risk.

Borkar’s tweet called for:

  • Immediate inspection of the affected areas
  • A comprehensive fact-finding study
  • Swift and decisive government action

Flooding of fields in North Goa is a recurring issue, often caused by inadequate drainage, blocked gutters, and breaches in protective bunds, which can lead to the stagnation and contamination of water in agricultural lands. The current incident highlights ongoing concerns about the region’s sewage and water management infrastructure, which has struggled to keep pace with growing demand and environmental challenges.

The GSPCB, responsible for monitoring and enforcing water pollution norms, has the authority to impose penalties on those responsible for illegal discharge of sewage or other pollutants into public or agricultural lands. However, local residents and farmers have repeatedly raised concerns about delayed responses and insufficient preventive measures.

As the monsoon season approaches, the risk of further flooding and contamination increases, making immediate intervention critical to protect both agriculture and public health in the St. Andre constituency and beyond.
